My Second Car

An unfamiliar but absolutely beautiful blue 1965 Buick Riviera was parked in front of the house when my parents got home. I was 20 years old and still living with them. They were surprised to say the least, because I already had a car that was running fine - a 71 Chevy Nova (also blue). And so I bought my second car while I still owned my first car. This was in 1985.

I bought it for two reasons: 1. an investment, and 2. a toy. Nice to get those two in one package, huh? It ran perfectly, had no dents, and I got it for an even $1,000. There was 65,000 miles on the odometer that were supposed to be original. (Prospective buyers when I went to sell it were fond of speculating that it was on it's second trip around the odo).

And what a toy it was! The features on this thing must have made it a luxury vehicle back in the year I was born. Comparing it to my Nova, I couldn't believe the stuff it had: Air conditioning, power steering, tilt wheel, power seats, power windows - including the little wing-window, power antenna for the radio, cruise control, the coolest center console and shifter, lots of wood in the interior, a growling 401 Wildcat engine, and those classic Riviera wheels!

Best part were those 65-only hidden headlights. Though I later talked to buffs who reported problems with those, the clam-shell covers on my 65 Riviera opened and closed perfectly. Man I miss that car.

I was fortunate to own it for 6 months before my parents made me sell it. I got $1250 for it, and some of the best memories of my life. One day when I own my dream home, there will be a space in the garage for a fully restored model...
